Project Overview
The historic Shoeless Joe Jackson Park (SJJP) is located in Greenville’s Westside within the Brandon Mill Community. The park, once part of an industrial Brandon Mill complex, was home to a field where the famous Shoeless Joe Jackson played baseball most of his childhood. This eight-acre park currently boasts parking, a walking path, a lighted baseball facility, a playground, and a shelter. It is intersected by a headwaters stream that in the Brushy Creek (South) watershed, a tributary to the Reedy River.
The project consisted of 3.1 acres of total disturbance and 400 linear feet of stream enhancements and stabilization with plantings, which received permit approval from both the Corp of Engineers and South Carolina DHEC. The eight-acre park was revitalized to incorporate Low Impact Development (LID) applications in several locations throughout the park. It included a stormwater wetland, an enhanced bioswale, a 400-ft stream improvement, a regenerative stormwater conveyance, a bioretention basin and 2 types of pervious pavers.
Additional park improvements were also incorporated into the design. 450 feet of sidewalk created a loop around the park that allowed visitors to stay on a sidewalk instead of walking in the road. Additionally, existing bridge was refaced, wooden guardrails provided additional safety for cars and pedestrians, and more than 50 trees and thousands of plant plugs and live stakes were planted throughout the park.
