You can enlist the assistance of an attorney (recommended) who will file a new action on your behalf, you can file a new action on your own or you can contact S. C. Department of Social Services by phone at 864-282-4650 or on their website at https://dss.sc.gov/child-support. SCDSS will only assist with initiating a child support action, not spousal support.

Payments are now being paid to and disbursed by the South Carolina State Disbursement Unit (SDU) and not by the county Family Courts. Each custodial parent must complete a form to have their support payments directly deposited into a checking/savings account at a financial institution of their choice or they can elect to have payments posted to a prepaid Debit MasterCard, called the Way2Go card. The forms for signing up for either option are available by contacting the State Disbursement Unit at 800-768-5858 or at Greenville County Family Court. You can also visit the South Carolina Child support website at https://dss.sc.gov/child-support.

Support payments should be available on your direct deposit or your Way2Go debit card on the second business day after the payment has been posted to your account.

If support was ordered to be paid through Family Court, we have counselors available to discuss your support questions in our office. You must come in person to speak to a counselor as no information will be given out over the phone. If support was ordered to be paid directly to you and not through the court, you should contact an attorney or prepare the proper contempt documents on your own.

The custodial parent must file pertinent information with the court before his/her name and/or address can be changed. You may mail the information to Greenville County Family Court or you may come to Family Court in person to complete a form. You must include a copy of your driver’s license before your request can be honored. If changing your address, you should include your old address, your new address, your case number, the name of the person who pays to you and the effective date of the change. If changing your name, you must include your former name, your new name, your case number, the name of the person who pays to you and you must also include a copy of a court order or marriage certificate that changed your name. Payments can only be accepted after an order is filed with the court. However, your payments will begin accruing on the effective date listed on the court order.

The Clerk of Court may issue a Rule to Show Cause once a payment is five (5) days delinquent and if a Rule is issued, you will have to appear in court on a designated date for your delinquency to be addressed by the court.

You should see a Family Court support counselor no later than one week prior to your court date to determine what, if anything, can be done to remove your name from the court docket. Depending on the circumstances of your case, a counselor may be able to assist you. Please note that this must be done in person as no phone calls will be accepted.

A modification action can be filed with Family Court asking that your payments be reduced and it is recommended that you contact an attorney to assist you with this process. If your case is a DSS case, you can contact DSS at 864-282-4650 and ask for a review. Should you seek a modification on your own, forms are available on the S. C. Judicial Department’s website at www.sccourts.org. Select Self Help Resources from the General Public tab, then SRL Child Support Packets, then Self-Represented Litigant - Child Support Decrease.

Credit and debit cards are accepted by the State Disbursement Unit (SDU); however, you must enroll in the service, enter your child support case number and credit/debit card information and make payments online or via a toll free call. A 2.95% fee applies with a maximum fee amount of $60.00. The SDU will credit your payment to your support obligation within four business days. When making purge or court costs payments at Greenville County Family Court, only cash, cashier’s checks or money orders are accepted.

If you are ordered to pay support through the court, you are required to keep the court informed of any address or employment change. You can mail new address/employment information to Greenville County Family Court, P. O. Box 27107 Greenville, SC 29616 or fax it to 864-467-5971. You must include your old address, your new address, your case number, the name of the person you pay to and include a copy of your driver’s license.

You may come to the inside payment window at Family Court and request a paper copy of your payment history. There is a $0.50 charge for each year of payments requested. Payment information can also be obtained over the phone by calling the State Disbursement Unit at 1-800-768-5858.
